The Red Umbrella

The Red Umbrella

40"x30" collage with pastels and charcoal.

The red umbrella is a metaphor for myself, the daughter of an American Army officer living in Orleans, France, in the fifties.

One day, the boys who walked to school past my front door as I waited for the American school bus called me "la fille rouge," referring to my very American dress: red scarf, red coat, red tights. Being only twelve, I blushed to match the outfit.
